Introduction
Every company needs to understand the nature of the tasks carried out on the day to
day basis. While the management may exhibit high-level concern on issues such as making
profits, understanding the basics of operations management may help to create the ultimate
strategies aimed at promoting the achievement of the desired level of outcomes in the future.
Operations management tasks may differ from one company to the other. The primary factors
responsible for the differences witnessed in the operations management tasks carried out by
each company revolve around the nature of processes undertaken.
Operations management involves a set of tasks which form the ultimate framework
for the successful completion of essential projects by companies. For instance, some of the
critical issues of concern that operations management present to companies include the
following.

Planning, in this case, refers to the tasks that a business may undertake aimed at

succeed in the future. Understanding the forces which may exist in the concept of operations
management may form the ultimate platform for creating strategic ways of pushing the

the understanding of the historical context of operations management, one may understand
the modern era concept exhibits diverse aspects (Bullard, n.d.).
Further, the realization and transition to the modern era come from the use of crucial
tools and resources, which in the end helped to redesign the entire concept making it easy for
companies to guarantee success. The primary aim of this paper revolves around the definition
of the changes and forces which occurred in history, affecting how companies undertake the

information based on the nature and operations of the selected company may act as a tool for
evaluating the level of success the firm may achieve in the future.
Critical forces
Recently, there exist many forces which changed how companies undertook the
concepts of operations management. The transition from the ancient to the modern era
operations management has been marked with several changes in the market. Earlier, the
operations management concept in companies was referred to as production management.
Production management reflected the basics of the tasks carried out based on the ideas
associated with manufacturing (Bullard, n.d.).
However, with time, the concept of production management changed due to the
occurrence of various issues that affected the operation carried out by business entities. For
instance, the integration of the core functionalities of business like marketing and finance
management makes the concepts of production management complex (Khanna, 2015).
Therefore, the evolution of operations management was driven by the desire to create a
common platform for understanding and coordinating the core operations that a business
undertakes.
Some of the conventional forces which occurred in the pat concerning operations
management include total quality control. Total quality control revolves around allowing the
interested companies to rely on the best material, partners, and processes in undertaking the

include the aspects associated with efficiency. Efficiency, in this case, may focus on
undertaking tasks with excellent resources, which, help to reduce wastage. The adoption of
concepts such as lean management and agile manufacturing allowed companies over time to
achieve high levels of efficiency when it comes to the management of the various tasks. On
the same note, understanding the basics of just in time delivery helped to shape the manner in
which companies perceived the concepts related to operations management (Bullard, n.d.).
These forces helped companies to redesign their business operations aimed at promoting the
achievement of efficiency.
The third force which occurred in the past affecting the changes in the concepts of
operations management includes customer satisfaction (Bullard, n.d.). The Wadry is

product is to produce fast, convenient and efficient products for people, making life easier.
The customer acts as the ultimate beneficiary and hence, the primary point of concern for

Instead, surpassing the needs and desires of the consumers may form a foundation for success
in the market. In this case, maintaining the required level of customer satisfaction remains a
challenge to many companies. For instance, trying to satisfy the customer creates competition
in the market. The increased competition calls for the implementation of strategic ways that

could help companies to maintain their customer bases in the market better than the rivals. In
the end, such an approach shapes the concepts of operations management since it forms the
foundation for the implementation of the right strategies.
These forces will affect the operations of the company in the context in various ways. For
instance, to achieve the desired levels of efficiency, the business will use the latest
technologies in the process. Additionally, the company will rely on the use of lean and agile
mechanisms in reducing wastage and cutting the costs associated with production. Further,
the business will need to implement the right strategies aimed at creating a competitive
advantage in the market to satisfy the needs of the selected customers.
Key obstacles
One of the significant obstacles which came about during the implementation of the
modern era operations management practices in the various companies include the concepts
of business process re-engineering. Specific changes, in this case, require the redesign and reengineering of some critical business operations to achieve the required levels of
performance. Issues such as customer satisfaction and efficiency called for the
implementation of new ways of conducting business. Failing to understand the best ways to
perform business process reengineering may create a platform that discouraging entities from

accommodate all the four processes into a single area. Under this concept, the Wadry
company needs to understand the basics of business process re-engineering, six sigma which
focuses on the improvement of quality of products, lean management which eliminates
wastes and finally, reconfigurable production mechanisms (Rosa & Machado, 2013). This

Focusing on the concepts of philosophy, the leadership today under operations
management and the four theories mentioned above seek to create a culture that supports

this case, such a change makes it easy for the management to empower the people, such as
employees into making informed decisions about the arising issues of concern (Stevenson &
Sum, 2014). Further, the continued empowerment of the employees makes it easy to
accommodate changes with the help of the use of reconfigurable production systems.
Business operations
The Wadry stands out as a firm which deals with the creation of household
commodities in the market. The company engages with the manufacturing and sale of a new
product that acts as a drier and a washer. The original product seeks to satisfy the desires of
people who are always on the move. Some of the features which make it ideal for such people
include high portability due to its smaller size and its multipurpose nature. Therefore, the
business in this context follows various processes such as planning, organizing, and
supervising in the manufacturing and delivery of the underlying product to the market.

in the future based on the allocation of resources. The system will allow the management to
understand the resources required to support the growth of a given component in the market.

customer buying trends and feedback, and estimating sales for the current month and beyond.
If the performance is higher than the average, the output will increase by 5%-8% on the
original basis. If the performance is basically the same, the supply output will remain
unchanged. If the performance is lower than the average, the supply output will be reduced
by 8% on the original basis. In the next 3 months of the observation period, if the product
does not have any positive changes, the specific products will be temporarily removed.
Additionally, the company will need to address the impacts that the use of six sigma and lean
systems may bring to its success in the future.
Six Sigma will equip the Wadry company with the appropriate strategies that would
help in the maintenance and guaranteeing the high reliability of products made. Supporting
high-quality products with the concepts of lean management may help the company to
guarantee optimum utilization of resources within the production processes. These trends will
support the operations management of the business, thus guaranteeing success, high
productivity, and profitability in the future.
