Running Head: WADRY COMPANY
MBA 690 Milestone One
Business Operation – The Wadry Company
Every company needs to understand the nature of the tasks carried out on the day to
day basis. While the management may exhibit high-level concern on issues such as making
profits, understanding the basics of operations management may help to create the ultimate
strategies aimed at promoting the achievement of the desired level of outcomes in the future.
Operations management tasks may differ from one company to the other. The primary factors
responsible for the differences witnessed in the operations management tasks carried out by
each company revolve around the nature of processes undertaken.
Operations management involves a set of tasks which form the ultimate framework
for the successful completion of essential projects by companies. For instance, some of the
critical issues of concern that operations management present to companies include the
Planning, in this case, refers to the tasks that a business may undertake aimed at
providing the appropriate levels of coordination of the associated operations within the
organization. Planning involves the conclusion of the critical stakeholders in the management
of the activities carried out on the day to day basis. On the other hand, planning requires the
senior management to understand the basics of the operations carried out by the company
intending to craft the most appropriate strategies that could result in improved performance.
On the other hand, organizing revolves around performing crucial tasks such as
delegation of operations, groping activities based on the associated departments, resource
allocation and but not limited to the assignment of the underlying operations to specific
employees. This process allows the management of a company to create high-level plans
aimed at reducing conflicting interests amongst the employees and their associated
stakeholders (Bullard, n.d.).
Supervising, on the other hand, refers to the task of overseeing the completion of the
associated tasks within an organization. The supervision tasks involve measuring the
completion of tasks as compared to the underlying standards in the company (Bullard, n.d.).
Finally, the last aspect that makes up operations management include making changes and
improvement whenever the need arises. In this case, the management acts as the ultimate
guide that offers the right direction for accommodating changes in the organization.
Together, these concepts play a crucial role in defining the ability of a company to
succeed in the future. Understanding the forces which may exist in the concept of operations
management may form the ultimate platform for creating strategic ways of pushing the
affected companies in the future towards achieving the desired levels of success. Based on
the understanding of the historical context of operations management, one may understand
the modern era concept exhibits diverse aspects (Bullard, n.d.).
Further, the realization and transition to the modern era come from the use of crucial
tools and resources, which in the end helped to redesign the entire concept making it easy for
companies to guarantee success. The primary aim of this paper revolves around the definition
of the changes and forces which occurred in history, affecting how companies undertake the
tasks involved in operation management. Further, the paper will address some of the
obstacles that the selected firm may encounter in the future, considering the aspect of
operations management. From another perspective, the paper will outline the changes which
occurred based on a similar trend in business operations in recent years. Understanding the
trends which occurred in areas such as production and but not limited to the management of
information based on the nature and operations of the selected company may act as a tool for
evaluating the level of success the firm may achieve in the future.
Recently, there exist many forces which changed how companies undertook the
concepts of operations management. The transition from the ancient to the modern era
operations management has been marked with several changes in the market. Earlier, the
operations management concept in companies was referred to as production management.
Production management reflected the basics of the tasks carried out based on the ideas
associated with manufacturing (Bullard, n.d.).
However, with time, the concept of production management changed due to the
occurrence of various issues that affected the operation carried out by business entities. For
instance, the integration of the core functionalities of business like marketing and finance
management makes the concepts of production management complex (Khanna, 2015).
Therefore, the evolution of operations management was driven by the desire to create a
common platform for understanding and coordinating the core operations that a business
Some of the conventional forces which occurred in the pat concerning operations
management include total quality control. Total quality control revolves around allowing the
interested companies to rely on the best material, partners, and processes in undertaking the
day to day operations. Many companies may not be in a position to use the best material or
processes in undertaking their tasks based on the various constraints that exist (Bullard, n.d.).
Some of the constraints include finance and resources availability. The demand for highquality goods and services in the industry helped to revolutionize the concept of operations
The second force that shaped the concepts of operations management in the market
include the aspects associated with efficiency. Efficiency, in this case, may focus on
undertaking tasks with excellent resources, which, help to reduce wastage. The adoption of
concepts such as lean management and agile manufacturing allowed companies over time to
achieve high levels of efficiency when it comes to the management of the various tasks. On
the same note, understanding the basics of just in time delivery helped to shape the manner in
which companies perceived the concepts related to operations management (Bullard, n.d.).
These forces helped companies to redesign their business operations aimed at promoting the
achievement of efficiency.
The third force which occurred in the past affecting the changes in the concepts of
operations management includes customer satisfaction (Bullard, n.d.). The Wadry is
committed to producing two in-one washing and drying suitcases. The sole purpose of the
product is to produce fast, convenient and efficient products for people, making life easier.
The customer acts as the ultimate beneficiary and hence, the primary point of concern for
companies. The Wadry seeks to provide products that satisfy the customers. Meeting the
demands or needs of the customers may not be sufficient for the Wadry to guarantee success.
Instead, surpassing the needs and desires of the consumers may form a foundation for success
in the market. In this case, maintaining the required level of customer satisfaction remains a
challenge to many companies. For instance, trying to satisfy the customer creates competition
in the market. The increased competition calls for the implementation of strategic ways that
could help companies to maintain their customer bases in the market better than the rivals. In
the end, such an approach shapes the concepts of operations management since it forms the
foundation for the implementation of the right strategies.
These forces will affect the operations of the company in the context in various ways. For
instance, to achieve the desired levels of efficiency, the business will use the latest
technologies in the process. Additionally, the company will rely on the use of lean and agile
mechanisms in reducing wastage and cutting the costs associated with production. Further,
the business will need to implement the right strategies aimed at creating a competitive
advantage in the market to satisfy the needs of the selected customers.
One of the significant obstacles which came about during the implementation of the
modern era operations management practices in the various companies include the concepts
of business process re-engineering. Specific changes, in this case, require the redesign and reengineering of some critical business operations to achieve the required levels of
performance. Issues such as customer satisfaction and efficiency called for the
implementation of new ways of conducting business. Failing to understand the best ways to
perform business process reengineering may create a platform that discouraging entities from
achieving positive outcomes in the future (Slack, Chambers & Johnston, 2010).
The Wadry company in the stated context will rely on the latest technologies to create
a platform that, in the end, will make it easy to achieve positive outcomes in relation to the
achievement of efficiency. Using technology as seen in the case of an integrated information
management system will allow the Wadry to understand the areas which need improvements
based on the changes witnessed in the market as far as the customer and market demands are
concerned. The use of such a tool, on the other hand, will allow the business to create
strategic approaches which would aid in handling the arising challenges in the market.
Another obstacle revolves around the lack of sufficient skills and knowledge to create the
appropriate strategies. The management in the Wadry will need to employ the right people
who exhibit sufficient skills and knowledge. These people will work together in performing a
high-level analysis of the needs of the business, which will make it easy to implement new
Further, resistance to change acts as another critical obstacle which affected the
companies in the past. As a remedy, the Wadry will use a strategic approach in
communicating change and bringing the entire workforce aboard. The workforce, in the end,
on the knowledge that it gains to support the implementation of the proposed changes. In the
end, the company will manage to implement ideas in the future based on the supportive
nature of the workforce among other stakeholders.
In the past, the concept of production management involved four different core
process of business operations. These processes include planning, organization, managing
change, and finally, supervising. These processes were carried out by various parties such as
the supervisors, planning managers, and but not limited to, organizing personnel. However,
today, the organizational structures under the modern concepts of operations management to
accommodate all the four processes into a single area. Under this concept, the Wadry
company needs to understand the basics of business process re-engineering, six sigma which
focuses on the improvement of quality of products, lean management which eliminates
wastes and finally, reconfigurable production mechanisms (Rosa & Machado, 2013). This
concept allows the Wadry companies to accommodate changes which arise with minimal
resistance from the workforce.
Focusing on the concepts of philosophy, the leadership today under operations
management and the four theories mentioned above seek to create a culture that supports
decision making. Also, the leadership shifts the attention from the processes to the people. In
this case, such a change makes it easy for the management to empower the people, such as
employees into making informed decisions about the arising issues of concern (Stevenson &
Sum, 2014). Further, the continued empowerment of the employees makes it easy to
accommodate changes with the help of the use of reconfigurable production systems.
The Wadry stands out as a firm which deals with the creation of household
commodities in the market. The company engages with the manufacturing and sale of a new
product that acts as a drier and a washer. The original product seeks to satisfy the desires of
people who are always on the move. Some of the features which make it ideal for such people
include high portability due to its smaller size and its multipurpose nature. Therefore, the
business in this context follows various processes such as planning, organizing, and
supervising in the manufacturing and delivery of the underlying product to the market.
As a firm that operates in a competitive market, the Wadry seeks to achieve
significant growth based on the abilities to deliver a product that satisfies the customers. The
company`s business operations as supported by the mentioned processes allow the
management to explore areas which require improvements and then implement the right
mechanisms to increase customer satisfaction (Reid & Sanders, 2015).
One of the primary factors which affect the level of productivity of the business, in
this case, includes the inclusion of the employees in the various processes. Employee
inclusion fosters better performance based on the concepts of change accommodation. In
another note, the use of lean systems, in the end, allow the business to achieve the required
level of performance, productivity, and profitability. From another perspective, the nature of
the product created will affect the profitability of the Wadry based on the total sales made
(Stevenson & Sum, 2014).
Based on the operations carried out by the business mentioned above, some of the key
trends witnessed in production include the use of six sigma and lean systems. These systems
help the Wadry elimination of wastes while at the same time increasing the quality of the
goods produced. On the other hand, the changes witnessed in the concepts of information
management include the Wadry Company use of decision support systems and enterprise
resource planning systems. In this case, the Wadry management can rely on the decision
superior systems to implement the most appropriate solutions to the underlying problems.
While the administration needs to address the role of technology in the organization, using
the decision support systems makes it easy to analyses the potential alternatives to come up
with the ultimate solution for the underlying issues affecting the operations carried out by the
entity (Stevenson & Sum, 2014).
On the same note, using the enterprise resource planning systems form the ultimate
foundation for understanding the needs of the business based on the adoption of the right
strategies aimed a strategically allocating resources to the various business operations. These
trends, in the end, affect the manner with which the management makes decisions, allocates
resources, guarantees the quality of products and manages information in the workplace.
Technology, as one of the key trends mentioned above as seen in the case of decision support
and enterprise resource planning systems, acts as one of the concepts which may affect the
product in the context. For instance, the Wadry may need to incorporate the concepts of
enterprise resource planning in the management of activities. Using the stated approach will
make it easy for the management to implement ideas which reflect on the changes that arise
in the future based on the allocation of resources. The system will allow the management to
understand the resources required to support the growth of a given component in the market.
Forecast sales volume is based on sales trends from the previous 3-6 months, assessing
customer buying trends and feedback, and estimating sales for the current month and beyond.
If the performance is higher than the average, the output will increase by 5%-8% on the
original basis. If the performance is basically the same, the supply output will remain
unchanged. If the performance is lower than the average, the supply output will be reduced
by 8% on the original basis. In the next 3 months of the observation period, if the product
does not have any positive changes, the specific products will be temporarily removed.
Additionally, the company will need to address the impacts that the use of six sigma and lean
systems may bring to its success in the future.
Six Sigma will equip the Wadry company with the appropriate strategies that would
help in the maintenance and guaranteeing the high reliability of products made. Supporting
high-quality products with the concepts of lean management may help the company to
guarantee optimum utilization of resources within the production processes. These trends will
support the operations management of the business, thus guaranteeing success, high
productivity, and profitability in the future.
Summing up, technology, among other trends in operations management affect the
manner with which businesses undertake their critical operations. Operations management
revolves around the use of theories such as lean manufacturing and but not limited to
business process re-engineering. These theories act as the ultimate trends that affect the way
businesses undertake their day to day operations. Changing the management philosophy in
the modern era makes companies more productive and profitable based on the shifting of
attention from the processes to the workforce. Understanding the trends, obstacles, and the
changes which occurred in recent years may help the Wadry to craft the ultimate strategy for
guaranteeing optimum resource allocation and the making of informed decisions.
