Write a five-paragraph essay discussing one concept from one chapter (from pages 19-90
for Concept #1, pages 91-186 for Concept #2).
What do I mean by “concept”? Open to one of the instructional chapters. Let’s say chapter
3. Look through the chapter. As you look through it you will see that it’s divided in to many
small sections with title in all caps. Each of these sections is 1-3 pages long. These sections
are what I’m calling “concepts.”
You’ll read the section carefully. You’ll take notes. When you think you understand it very
well, write a five (or so) paragraph essay explaining it to me. One important thing you
should do is to create your own examples, so that you aren’t just summarizing, but showing
me that you can apply the concept.
You will need to do one of these essays for a B, and two for an A.
This paper is due the week we discuss the chapter your concept is in, in class. In any case,
you must attempt this assignment this assignment before the midterm (for Concept #1,
Concept #2 is due before the final).

“They Say, I Say” Concept # 1
The concept that I will be discussing is under the chapter titled the “Art of Quoting.” I
decided to present on this particular concept because I believe that quotes are very vital in
essays. Specifically, I will be talking about the technique titled, “Frame Every Quotation.” I
believe that everyone should know how to properly introduce a quote. Essentially, the process of
how you bring up a quote could make or break your paper. That being said the two most
important things you must do when you want to use a quote in an essay is to introduce it, as well
as explaining it. You do not state a quote with little to no explanation. If you do this you end up
leaving your audience “dangling” and this is no good. Your audience will be confused and they
will not fully understand the point that is trying to be stated.
First you must adequately introduce the quote. This means stating all relevant
background of whoever said the quote such as, name, occupation, and relevance to the essay.
You also want to make sure that the quote and author add to the argument of your essay, it must
have relevance. For example, if I am doing an essay on ending pollution then I am going to quote
a scholar with expert opinion on pollution. I am not going to quote someone with an expert
opinion on sports because their quote would not be relevant to my argument and it would not
help add to it.
Secondly, you have to explain the quote that you have introduced. You must give a
reason for stating it in the first place. Explain its significance and its worth or else readers will

have a hard time following your essay and the point you are trying to get across will be lost. If I
were to state a quote I would add analysis in order to portray its reason for being there. As an
example, if I were to be writing a research paper on music, I would quote an artist and explain
why their quote is important and how it relates to my topic. Quoting can be extremely powerful
if you are able to do it right.
There are ways to correctly make sure that you are “framing every quotation.” One way
to frame a quotation is to insert it into a “quotation sandwich.” The statement that you introduce
acts as the top slice of the bread. The explanation following the introduction acts as the bottom
slice. An example of what introducing the quote correctly when writing an essay looks like;
According to X, “…” And an example of explaining the quote would look like; The essence of
X’s argument is that ___. These are templates that one can use when framing a quote in an essay.
Quoting in general can be a very tricky skill. I myself have had trouble with it before. As
I said before quoting can be very powerful in an essay when it is used correctly. Striving to
frame a quotation will make the “Art of Quoting” much easier to accomplish. You must make
sure that you put in thought and evaluation of the quote in order to make sure that it has
relevance for the essay that you are trying to write. Templates are very helpful and the diction
you use before introducing or before explaining the quote is key to framing.
