250 words and 1-2 references under each discussion5251) Rosanna GuadalupeRe: Topic 1 DQ 1 (Obj. 1.2)In today’s society there are many different ways one tends to view the word work. For me, it means doing something without thought or regard because it has to be done in order to gain a wage for survival.I would say not everyone has a “natural” desire to work; it is more like a necessity to work. Also, there are those that believe they are meant or destined for greatness and are waiting for their 15 seconds of fame. Putting in work means something that is hard to do, it is time, it takes a lot out of a person and if we have learned nothing else from today’s society, it is that no one likes to work hard for what they have or want.An overvalued position would be one of a politician. They can hold their position of office for a lengthy period of time and are paid an exuberant amount of money to do little to almost no work at all.I also believe that athletes and entertainers are far beyond overvalued. The money they make is outrageous in comparison to what it should be, and to think; some of them do not have a college education! An undervalued position would be one of a teacher. I say this because they seem to have the hardest job of all and have a demand that is placed upon their shoulders and having to take care of, teach as well as be there for their students, yet their pay does match all they have to go through, it is nowhere near what they should be compensated. “We not only expect schools to educate our children, we also demand that they make up for parenting deficiencies, society’s problems and diplomatic blunders. It’s no surprise, then that teachers feel undervalued, because they are” (Morrison, 2015).On another note, those in public service police, fire, EMT, etc often give their time, energy and life for the community. I am not entirely sure how much they get paid or what benefits they receive from the government or city. But it cannot be enough to walk out of their door daily, leave their family behind and not know if they will make it back home.Morrison, N. (2015). If teachers feel undervalued it’s because they are. I do not think that everyone possesses a natural desire to work. Some people work as a way of providing for themselves and their family. This means that the individual may not like their line of work but is doing it anyway as a way of surviving. When a person actually likes their job, they do not necessarily see it as work but as a fulfillment of what they were called to do. Work is a word that has various definition based on the individual’s perception of what they view as work and if they are happy or not with their current place of employment. For me personally, I currently work as a support coordinator and a mental health specialist, working with individuals that are disabled & have mental health problems. I do not see my jobs as work because this is a field that I am passionate about and I view it as a way for me to obtain more knowledge in my pursuit to become a counselor; making a career out of it. According to Brown & Lent (2013), the word career is typically used to describe the work of an individual that actually chose their work and is fulfilled by it; not the work of someone that is working to make ends meet. The work that I think is undervalued in society is nurses. Nurses are sometimes looked at differently because they are not doctors, and patients can deem them as not knowing what they are talking about. Nurses are the ones that spend the most time with the patient and assist them with all their needs. Nurses becomes confidants for the family members that are grieving a sick relative and are always looking for ways to offer their support. Work that I think is overvalued in society is stockbrokers. Stockbrokers make a large sum of money and are only relevant to the individuals that can afford to invest in stocks. Stockbrokers are seen as the upper echelon in society because they make the already rich individuals richer.ReferenceBrown, S.D. and Lent, R.W. (2013). Career Development and Counseling (2nd ed.). This legislation created, “national standardsfor electronic healthcare transactions and federal privacy provisions to safeguard protectedhealth information” (Agris & Spandorfer, 2016). The act explains specific limitations andprecautions that healthcare providers must take to ensure protected health information isreleased to qualified parties on an as-necessary basis. Agris and Spandorfer explain thereasoning for HIPAA with, “…ensure the protection of PHI while allowing the flow of healthinformation necessary to provide high quality healthcare and protect the public’s well-being…” (2016).HIPAA is relevant to the practice of professional counseling, as clients are requiredto share sensitive health information with their therapist to achieve effective treatment. The requirements of HIPAA legislation require that mental health practitioners take greatcare to ensure information pertaining to the client is stored safely and securely;professional counselors have the responsibility to ensure that a patient’s information is noteasily accessible to the public, or to any party that the client does not believe should havesuch information. Thus, professional counselors must ensure that they notify the client oftheir privacy policies and receive permission to distribute patient information in certainsituations.ReferencesAgris, J. As the client or patient, you are never allowed not to see your information, even if you have not paid bills if it is in a hospital or in a mental health situation not covered by insurance. According to the Health Information Privacy site, “Covered entities must have procedures in place to limit who can view and access your health information as well as implement training programs for employees about how to protect your health information” (2017). Professional counselors ensure this through not speaking about their clients or their information to outside parties without their clients’ permission, and they can store their information electronically or through paper files if they want. This means, that the client has the right to be informed if the benefits, expected outcomes, and risks of a therapeutic approach or research project in which they have consent to participate. It also includes the counselor’s policies and the state and federal laws. Informed consent is a document that protects the counselor and the client. It is imperative that the counselor implements the informed consent document as soon as the client enters into the therapeutic relationship because it allows the client to make informed decisions and respect each person’s autonomy. The doctrine of informed consent requires that clients are informed of “potential benefits and risks of the contemplated procedures, as well as any possible alternative procedures” (The Concise Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology and Behavioral Science, 2004, para. 1). In addition, informed consent requires the information to be given knowingly and with appreciation to ensure that the client fully understand the information provided.https://search-credoreference-com.lopes.idm.oclc.org/content/entry/wileypsych/informed_consent/0Seek informed consent.
